The College Application Essay
Why do you want to attend the schools on your list? This is a question that you'll probably encounter (and need to answer) when writing your college application essay. After all, there are so many schools from which to choose. In the previous section we talked briefly about making your college application essay stand out amongst the masses. We mentioned that you could discuss how you would fill a need or void that currently exists at the school. However, the reverse is also true. Through your college application essay, you could discuss how the school (let's say the Acme University) could help you fill your own needs. For example, perhaps you want to work in the United Nations, and it just so happens that Acme University has an excellent international relations department. Your college application essay should highlight this connection. Or perhaps Acme University has a relaxed curriculum with few requirements. Your college application essay could talk about how this general philosophy is encouraging to you because you want to explore as many disciplines as possible during your liberal arts education. Or perhaps Acme University has many requirements and a very rigid curriculum. Your college application essay could discuss how this would help you become more focused and disciplined about a subject you find particularly interesting. In reality, some of the criteria we use for selecting schools are not as lofty as the above examples. Often, factors such as cost and location are what make us like or dislike a school. When writing your college application essay, you should probably stay away from candid answers like this. Your ultimate goal is to impress the admissions officer. If you're your college application essay admits that the reason you like Acme University is because it is cheap and close, you probably won't get in. Just FYI. | ||
