The Admission Essay
For our purposes, we will define an admission essay as any general personal statement
or long-form answer that you might need to submit for a college or graduate application.
The admission essay is not to be confused with the scholarship application essay.
The admission essay is usually anywhere from 300 to 1200 words, and it answers a specific
prompt or general question. Officers at the school will review your essay in conjunction
with your transcript, recommendations, extracurricular activities, and test scores.
We cannot stress how important having a strong admission essay is to the overall success
of your application. Make sure that you really take the time to smooth out all the kinks
and rough spots that might crop up as you write your admission essay. You will thank yourself later.
A well written admission essay should never exceed the specific word limit, nor should it be extremely
short either. When writing your admission essay however, do not become so concerned with the exact length.
It is much easier to edit down than up (i.e. it is much easier to make your essay shorter if it is already too long).
If possible, brainstorm some ideas for your admission essay and make a general outline of the most important
themes. If you do enough work beforehand, your admission essay will practically write itself.
